Le sujet (the subject)
Le sujet (the subject) is the word or group of words that indicates who performs the action or who is in the state expressed by the verb.
Examples:
Je, Marie, Les enfants.
In French grammar, the subject is an essential syntactic function that determines the agreement of the verb.
It may be expressed by a pronoun, a noun, a noun phrase, an infinitive, a subordinate clause, or an impersonal element.
The subject may appear before or after the verb depending on the sentence structure (declarative, interrogative, emphatic, literary).
1. le sujet pronominal
The subject is a personal pronoun.
Example: Elle parle.
2. le sujet nominal
The subject is a noun or a noun phrase.
Example: Le chat dort.
3. le sujet infinitif
The subject is an infinitive verb.
Example: Lire est important.
4. le sujet propositionnel
The subject is a subordinate clause.
Example: Qu’il vienne est nécessaire.
Marie chante chaque matin.
Les élèves réussissent l’exercice.
Ton frère attend dehors.
Je sors maintenant.
Le bébé boit son lait.
Ces femmes lisent beaucoup.
Mon ami marche vite.
La porte s’ouvre doucement.
